祇園祭の前祭の山鉾巡行の様子です。
祇園祭は京都の都に感染症は流行し、
その事に対し、当時の天皇陛下が命令を下され、
八坂神社（明治時代以前は祇園社という社名でした）の
分け御霊をお神輿にのせ神泉苑に送り感染症の流行を
神様の力で止めたのが始まりです。
祇園祭とは
祇園祭は祇園祭は貞観年中（859～877）京の都に疫病が流行したとき、
勅を奉じて66本の矛を立て洛中の男児が祇園社の神輿を神泉苑に送って厄災の除去を祈ったのに由来し、
平安時代の中頃からは規模も大きくなり、空車、田楽、猿楽等も加わって盛んな賑わいを見せてきました。
豪壮かつ華麗な祇園祭は、千百年の伝統を有する八坂神社の祭礼です。
古くは、祇園御霊会（ごりょうえ）と呼ばれ、貞観11年（869）に京の都を
はじめ日本各地に疫病が流行したとき、
勅を奉じて当時の国の数66ヶ国にちなんで66本の矛を立て、
祇園社より神泉苑に神輿を送って、災厄の除去を祈ったことにはじまります。
祇園祭は、7月1日の「吉符入」にはじまり、31日の「疫神社夏越祭」で
幕を閉じるまで、1ヶ月にわたって各種の神事・行事がくり広げられます。
